This political cartoon is used to show the level of response by the United Nations. It is documented that the United Nations could have done more in saving the lives of thousands of people. The cartoon shows the leader addressing an empty room. I believe this is to depict the level of interest in the Rwandan Genocide 20 years after the tragedy. The janitor is cleaning up the conference room and also showing little concern for the speaker. The United Nations did send in peacekeeping troops, but this small force was quickly outnumbered. Political cartoonists distil their opinions on power and culture into art and commentary with the sharp points of their pens. They can make readers gleeful -- or angry (Howell, 2008). The Point of political cartoons is to draw attention to situations you don’t agree with (Howell, 2008). The cartoon takes a serious event and uses a comedic approach to communicating a concern. This subtle approach reaches people in a more acceptable way.
